Fielder Winter Workshop

I was happy to be able to take a workshop with John Fielder, these are the shots from the field outings. I LOVE Winter shooting, this reinforced some good habits, taught me new subjects, and worked a bit more on my structured side of shooting. I can honestly say several of these shots would NOT have happened without the workshop. I also learned a lot from other students, as we went through our review with Mr. Fielder I was astonished at several of the views, angles and especially the close-up macro type shots of crystals that formed overnight. So much to see on this planet that no single person will ever conquer the world of photography.

  • An interesting study in winter stream photography among the colorful willows. I had another version of this picture where the stream rambled a bit but the ummm ... crevice ... between mountains was centered. I didn't think it was right, Mr. Fielder definitely nixed it ... I had this one in the portfolio though :) It was good to hear I was on about the centering of the triangle in the sky being off base.

  • This was taken with a 300mm zoom, when you apply the 1.6 conversion you're talking over 400mm. The detail is only there because of underexposure and tripod. I always worry about a shaded foreground, but it definitely works here ... the dividing of shades in layers is sweet.

  • This series of four was so difficult for me to see but across the class this was voted the most amazing location. A couple of folks got these three trees in perfect symmetry and when I looked at their photos I was blown away. This set of 4 definitely gave me new things to look at when out in the field.

  • This shot has an odd symmetry about it despite the tree moving semi-vertically. I like it :)

  • This is my second favorite of my series, simply because the aspen blends with the willows and seems to get tangled away...

  • And ... this is my favorite of my series, I like the complete weaving of the aspen into the willows and the semi-symmetry of this picture.

  • I'm sad about the lack of color in this one, but then there isn't much color in this type of shot in the shade with sage. Now that I think about it though, I took this picture because of the interesting crown on the sage ... perhaps some black and white would work here ...

  • First light on the peaks of Colorado. A breathtaking site and it is really sad that so many people go through their days in this state without seeing this as many times as they can each year. It really doesn't get any better. At one point I had to divorce the photographer from the person and just sit and watch and remember why I'm taking this picture. So ... goal for the year ... get my butt on one of these peaks and be on it when first light hits.

  • I enjoy this picture immensely, but aesthetically it is too chaotic. I used f/1.4 giving me a very, very short depth of field. Another person in the workshop took a similar shot but used more like an f/22 giving her the full lead out line ... it was much better ... but I do like my short depth of field :) Mostly cause it's sparkly ;-)

  • I enjoy this picture immensely. It is probably the one that got the biggest thumbs up from John Fielder. There is an interesting lead in line from the bottom corner but it meanders part way through, the old house is in the top right corner, the morning light is rich and the snow is even interesting. Yay ... I'll take it :)
